The spillage is thought to have started on the ground floor of Wilkinson in The Pentagon Shopping Centre in Chatham at 5.30pm while a janitor was cleaning the floors, the janitor then accidentally knocked the bucket of water over. This created an extremely large spillage over the floor of Wilkinson, some of it spreading out of the doors and into the main shopping area.
Shops were evacuated as more janitors were called in to tackle the spilled liquid. It is believed they used mops to clean the floor. Police cordoned off the entrance in Military Road for just over an hour.
The evacuation was carried out due to worries that someone would slip over the water as there were no yellow "Wet Floor" signs available as they were being used elsewhere in the centre.
An eyewitness said there were three police cars and three Medway Cleaning Services vans on the scene.
Some shops reopened just before 6.30pm.
Janitors remained on the scene, using air conditioning units and Bounty paper towels to dry the floor.
The cause of the spillage is being fully investigated.
